Smoking is a dangerous and unhealthy habit that can destroy your lungs as well as your mouth. When it comes to smoking and dental problems, there are many, and the biggest as well as scariest problems that could develop are gum disease and oral cancer. These two conditions can destroy your smile as well as cause additional health problems, like heart disease, strokes, and others. So if you are a smoker who has just decided to quit, we are so excited for you! To help you along your journey, we are happy to provide the following five tips:

No. 1: Have a plan
One of the best ways that you can succeed when quitting your smoking habit is by creating a plan. Pick a day to quit smoking and do everything you can to avoid cigarettes and tobacco products following that day. You can also create a plan and use tools online at smokefree.gov or you can call the toll-free number: 1-800-QUIT-NOW. You can also download a quit-smoking app that will track your progress.

No. 2: Don’t do it alone
Don’t go through this journey alone. It’s best if you have family and friends helping you step by step. So, tell your loved ones that you have decided to quit, ask for their support, and tell them exactly what you need them to do so they can help you. Also, try to spend time with people who want you to succeed and talk to friends who have also quit the habit. They may have advice that can help you.

No. 3: Stay busy
Now that you’re quitting one habit, it’s best to pick up another habit that will keep you busy, like exercising. Also try to make dinner and movie dates with your friends to keep your mind off tobacco. We also recommend chewing sugarless gum throughout the day so your mouth stays busy and you also prevent cavities.

No. 4: Avoid smoking triggers
Do your best to stay away from people, places, and things that tempt you to smoke. Some things that could trigger the smoking habit could be stress, coffee, alcohol, and hanging out with people who smoke. We also strongly recommend throwing away your cigarettes, lighters, and ashtrays and go to places that do not allow smoking.

No. 5: Reward your accomplishments
Each hour that passes by is an accomplishment, so reward yourself for it! Kicking your smoking habit is a step-by-step process that requires strength, courage, and faith. As you continue on your journey, you deserve to be rewarded for your success.
